Rotator Cuff injury/tear?
I dislocated my shoulder surfing after a heavy wave hit my arm, and I believe I now have a tear in my rotator cuff/ligaments. I did physical therapy for about six weeks, and I saw an orthopedist. The doctor didn't do an MRI, and he said just to see how it heals up, maybe we won't need to do surgery. I was happy to not have to have surgery. It has been eight years now and it has not dislocated again. I am a 43 year old male. I can do normal activities such as getting dressed, brushing my teeth, driving a car, and playing golf which I love. When I lift weights, after the third set of ten dumb bell presses, I can't lift anymore with that arm but my other arm can keep going. I also don't surf anymore because it seems like I could re-injure it. It feels weaker than it used to feel even though the muscles around it are decently strong . When I play golf, I hit the ball about 210 to 235 yards on a drive. So I have mobility and some strength, but it's not perfect. I also try not to lift anything heavy above my head because it seems like I could re-injure it. Generally, I'm happy that I can do normal things, yet I do favor it at times. My question is does having rotator cuff surgery make it perfect again? I would be sad if I had the surgery and then I had less mobility and couldn't play golf. Does surgery prevent the tear from getting worse? That is, could the tear get worse if I don't have surgery? If I don't have the surgery, am I just on a course to eventually wear-out my shoulder from the tear getting bigger? Or do most people with this type of tear/injury just try not to re-injure it and be happy that they have decent mobility and some strength?

Rotator cuff injury - what PT can I do?
I hurt my shoulder yesterday, and I'd like to try to figure out exactly what's wrong with it and what to do about it. Here's the deal. I was surfing my kayak on a big wave and crashed. I chundered over the handlebars pretty hard and something happened to my shoulder. Afterwards, it felt like I hit it against something, but it might have been tweaked instead. The upper front surface of my shoulder is tender just in front of and below the outer end of my collarbone. It hurts to lift my arm when it is pointed straight forward. Other motions are more or less unaffected. (Specifically, doing the usual interior/exterior rotations with an exercise band does not hurt.) When the arm is relaxed, nothing hurts. I was thinking that this could be a rotator cuff injury, but I don't know if it's a tear or just a strain of some sort. Does anyone know how I can judge the severity? Also, I'd like to get back to paddling as soon as I can. What sort of physical therapy can I do, and how soon can I get back to paddling? Surely there are some doctors or NP's that peruse Y!A in their spare time, doling out free consultations. And I suspect that the best diagnosis would be an MRI, which is not really possible in this town.

What could it be besides Rotator Cuff Injury? How to heal?
It has been... maybe three weeks now? My left shoulder feels really stiff. It's not a sharp pain, but rather quite dull and heavy. It's fairly constant, usually present in some form throughout the day. Sometimes it keeps me up at night because I can't find a position in which it feels comfortable. The pain doesn't wake me up, however. I haven't seen a doctor about this because I am currently in Japan and my history with the doctors here (for other issues) has been poor (i.e. they are useless for all but the most common things). Also, I will be returning to America within a few months, so I am trying to hold out if possible. Note, I am a 26-year-old guy, 5'11" / 165. No previous shoulder injuries. The pain is in the top of my shoulder blade, but sometimes radiates down the arm and into the elbow area. On rare occasions I can feel slight tingling in my fingers. It's not carpal tunnel, however. What could be the problem besides a rotator cuff injury? Are there any stretches I can/should be doing even without seeing a doctor first? Would a doctor be able to diagnose anything without an x-ray and/or MRI? Thank you.

How long does it take a rotator cuff injury to heal and inflammation to go down?
Unfortunately, I injured BOTH of my shoulders a few months ago. Doing yoga, I put a lot of strain on my muscles in the downward dog pose (I put my body weight on my shoulders which they apparently weren't strong enough to hold up and they became tense and a little shaky). Then, I took a self defense class shortly thereafter that had me doing backward elbow jabs into a padded surface repeatedly. Between these two injuries, I really damaged my shoulders. I haven't been able to determine exactly what the diagnosis is, though tendonitis and bursitis definitely seem like culprits and maybe a muscle tear. I do get the popping/crunching sounds in my shoulder. I am in my early 30s, so I am hopeful that this can heal. I saw an orthopedic surgeon who wanted me to do an MRI with contrast but I am not willing to submit to the trauma of that injection and experience. So, I have been taking anti-inflammatory meds in the morning and at night as well as icing 3-4 times daily. I have been receiving physical therapy treatments where I am getting a few exercises and receiving ultrasound and electrical stimulation. I have been treated for about a month now and I am seeing a little progress, so I am encouraged and hoping I can avoid surgery if I keep working at it. The thing is, I am quite young and I have really good shoulder strength and range of motion given my situation. So, despite the pain, I think I can heal if I continue down this path working on it. I have been consistent about the icing and daily exercises (and as long as the inflammation is down, it doesn't cause discomfort). Any clues at to what might be the culprit given the nature of these injuries? How long until the inflammation drastically reduces on its own when I can start icing it less and less, reduce meds, etc? How long should this process take realistically and are my chances good if my shoulder strength and range of motion is this good? I just get an ache in my upper arms and I notice that external rotator exercises are more difficult (and somewhat painful) in contrast with internal rotation exercises that aren't a problem. FYI: I did do X-rays which revealed no bone spurs and the bones looked healthy and normal... Thank you!

How to check for rotator cuff injury? Please help.?
Is there any exercise in which i could perform to tell me if I have a rotator cuff injury. I get pain if I do overhand activities. Is there some kind of exercise that will give me pain which is saying its the rotator cuff. I am only 15 and absolutely love volleyball. I am hoping to continue it past school. It is probaly the thing I wake up for. Seriously. My shoulders have always been dodgy. Think its double jointed if thats possible as i can like click it out the joint sorta. Its weird anyway i hurt it a couple months ago and let it heal for a few weeks and then came back. It was good for a few weeks then got reinjured. was off for only a week then. Since then my shoulder has been good but last 3 weeks i have been getting like an ache in my shoulder as i play. as the training progresses, the pain in my shoulder does as well. By the end of the training session its pretty sore. I had training thursday and my arm is still sore today (monday) altho i can put up with it. i am really hoping it isnt a tear cuz apparently i might have to get it operated on. I am only young and want to continue volleyball. If anyone has any experiences or advice that would be helpful. i dont really want to go to physio to be honest as I dont want to have to get advised to go to surgery and what not. Good feedback for best answer and will appreciate any help. Any help! thanks heaps I can make the full circle said without any pain however if i did that super fast i would probaly get pain and my shoulder like rolls weirdly when i do that. Like over bone maybe? not like i have no cartlidge but like just rotates funny
